History of the Match Members of the Ashland Alumni Soccer Association frequented the local George Wheeler Cup that meshed regular season matches with an Alumni Game between league rivals Framingham and Natick. Since 1994, the tradition has only grown in stature, with the recent Ashland versus Hopkinton Alumni Soccer Game an inspired offspring of the event. Dreamed of by current president, Jonathan Alves, the Game serves as the primary fundraiser for the Association, via ticket and concession sales. Each match since starting in 2007 has been played Friday night, “under the lights,” the day after Thanksgiving. Currently, the Association aims to achieve Non-Profit, Charity Organization 501(c)3 status by 2010 (at the latest), so as to allow for the distribution of scholarships to graduating soccer players of that year. Each successive Alumni Game complements funds available, while fostering ties between older alumni, current high school, and youth athletes. © 2009 Jordan Farrer |
